According to the police, the incident happened when Irfan slipped through the gap in the balcony railing of his house in N N Garden. His father, Syed Abu Tahir, was away at work while the toddler’s mother was in the kitchen when the incident happened.
The boy’s family told the police that Irfan was playing in the hall and the television was switched on to keep him engaged. His mother later heard a thud and found her son lying on the ground.
The boy was rushed to a private hospital and later to the children’s hospital in Egmore, where he, however, died. His body was sent for post-mortem.
The Washermenpet police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating.
The police said that the child usually went to the balcony only when accompanied by his mother. Neighbours also told the police that the child’s mother never let him even to the neighbour’s house alone.
In a similar incident in October, a two-year-old girl accidentally slipped from her mother’s arms and fell to death from an apartment in Parrys.
