The selected school students from Salem and Tharamangalam accompanied by 10 staff members were taken to Salem Airport on Tuesday morning. They boarded the True Jet flight which departed at 11.30 am and landed in Chennai airport at 12.50 pm. After the journey, the students expressed joy at their maiden flight experience. At the city airport, they were welcomed by Ravindranath Singh, the Joint Director of Department of Welfare of Differently Abled Persons.
Eyewitnesses said some of the students even cried as taking a flight was a dream come true for several of them. "Earlier we used to ask our teachers whether we would be able to touch the plane at least once, but they had said that we could only watch planes take flight but not touch them. Now, we have travelled in it. We will not forget this day," said one of the students. A special MTC bus was arranged for the students to go to Anna University from the airport. They are scheduled to return to Salem by train later in the evening.
