However, the kidnappers dropped the victim back at the spot from where he was picked up after his mother reportedly told them that she did not have any money to pay the ransom.
Police said the victim, Mamu Miah, and one of the kidnappers, Sanjay, also a Tripura native, were friends who used to work together in a juice shop at a popular multiplex in the locality until three months ago.
Sanjay allegedly asked Mamu Miah to meet him at Thousand Lights on Tuesday. “When Mamu met Sanjay in Thousand Lights, the latter took him to a friend’s house in Poonamallee and locked him up.
Later, he called Mamu’s mother over phone and asked her to deposit Rs 2 lakh in his account. However, his mother reportedly told him that she did not have so much money.
After negotiating with her to deposit at least Rs 20,000 but without any success, he later dropped Mamu back at the same spot in an autorickshaw,” said police.
Based on Mamu’s complaint, police have registered a case and have launched a hunt for the suspects.
