Use force to evict fish vendors from Marina, says HC

Dealing a severe blow to the fish vendors on the Loop Road near Marina, the Madras High Court said authorities can use force to evict fish vendors from there if they refuse to relocate to the proposed fish market in the area. The court directed the chiefs of city police and Corporation to work together and develop Marina into a clean beach with world class standards.

A division bench comprising Justice Vineet Kothari and Justice R Suresh Kumar gave the direction to the Commissioners of the Chennai Corporation and the city police on a plea moved by Fishermen Care, a fishermen rights organisation seeking direction from the government to implement the Murari Commission recommendations.


Additional Advocate General SR Rajagopal submitted that a fresh affidavit would be filed regarding development of the enclosed perpendicular liner area of Marina beach for arranging the shops and carts for sale of food items and other commodities in compliance with the provisions of the Street Vendors Act and Food Safety Standards Act.
