Bouquets of fresh flowers, carefully folded napkins, and lit fragrant candles dotted along the length of a table. Aesthetics is only a part of table décor, a trend that is slowly emerging in the city.

According to Ami Kothari, a table décor artist from Mumbai, the art is a way to elevate the typical dining experience while acting as conversation starters for the guests. Having hosted five workshops in Chennai over three years, Kothari explained that a mix of professionals and homemakers are interested in table décor.
“Before I got married, I wasn’t really interested in taking care of the house. Now, I want to look after the house, and so I became interested in various aspects of maintaining a home, and table décor was one of them,” said Devanshi Garg, a resident of Egmore. She explained that going the extra mile for special occasions made an event feel more personal.
Locals across age groups are interested in table décor, explained Heeba Sait, a representative from Gatsby Collections, who hosted a table décor workshop earlier this year. “I saw a mix of youngsters and older people. Over 45 people attended the workshop we had held at Tryst Gourmet. I think the reason for such attendance is because people in the city are interested and excited to learn something new,” she said.
Using inexpensive and readily available materials is key for table décor, explained Kothari. “The table is the part of the house that you can change. The interior décor is permanent, and a table can be adjusted based on the event. Rather than decorate for special events or festivals, I want people to add a personal touch to a simple dinner at the end of the day,” said Kothari, talking about the workshop she will host on December 10 at Good Earth, Nungambakkam.
