21 sovereigns seized from history-sheeter in Nolambur

Nolambur police arrested a history-sheeter involved in series of snatching incidents in the city and seized at least 21 sovereigns from him.

The accused S Ramesh alias ‘Mattu’ Ramesh was arrested based on a complaint filed by Srinivasan, owner of an eatery, after the accused stole money from him. Following the complaint, Ramesh was remanded in judicial custody on Friday.


Ramesh who had eaten at Srinivasan’s shop on Bharathi Salai, on Thursday afternoon, refused to pay for the food and allegedly snatched cash from Srinivasan.


When others came to rescue, Ramesh allegedly smashed cool drink bottles in the shop and threatened to stab those who tried to nab him.


After he fled the spot, Srinivasan filed a complaint at the Nolambur police station and Ramesh was secured with the help of CCTV footage.


Inquiries revealed that Ramesh was a history-sheeter and was indulged in several chain snatching incidents in the city. As many as 21 stolen jewellery were seized from him.


Meanwhile, Anna Nagar police arrested a 59-year-old man who stole 1 sovereign from a house. The accused G Shankar (59) of Kancheepuram district was remanded in judicial custody on Friday.


The victim A Rajeswari had filed a complaint that an unidentified man entered her house through the back door and robbed her. Police secured Shankar on suspicion on Friday morning. During interrogation, he admitted his crime.
