The arrested persons were identified as Lingeswaran (20) and Satish (21) of Chromepet, Mageswaran (19) and Kumar (21) of Selaiyur, and Aravindan (21) from Tambaram. Police said Sathish and Lingeswaran already have robbery cases against them.
Police said the gang of five went in an autorickshaw to a petrol bunk in Rajakeezhpakkam in Selaiyur to fill gas in the vehicle on Saturday midnight.
Trouble started when the staff asked for money for the gas filled in the auto. But when the fuel station employees asked for money, the gang took out the sickles and threatened them. Then they robbed cash around Rs 6,000 from the bunk and escaped from the spot on the auto. However, they were not aware that the surveillance cameras installed at the fuel station were recording their activities.
After the petrol bunk owners lodged a complaint at the Selaiyur police station, a police team went to the spot and checked the footage from the CCTVs kept in the bunk. From the visuals, they identified one of the gang member as Sathish. On Monday, the police arrested all the five of them near Tambaram. Police said Satish and Lingeswaran are already facing many robbery cases. All the five were remanded in judicial custody and sent to prison.
