Sundar Rajan, a resident of Irumbuliyur, was a driver working with a private college. On Monday night Sundar was lying drunk in front of a tyre showroom in Irumbuliyur. When the showroom staff asked him to move away, Sundar pelted stones at the glass doors of the store.
The staff then called the police and a team from Tambaram police station arrived and took Sundar Rajan to the station for inquiry. Meanwhile, Sundar’s family rushed to the station after hearing about the incident.
Sundar was then let off after a warning. On Tuesday morning, however, Sundar did not wake up and when his wife went to check on him, she found that he was dead. Following this, his relatives gathered in front of the police station claiming that Sundar died because he was assaulted by the police earlier.
The police, however, said Sundar was not assaulted during the inquiry in the station and that he was treated well. They also claimed that they have evidence to prove it. “He might have died of a heart attack,” an officer said.
A case has been registered by the police and the body has been sent to the Chromepet government hospital for a post-mortem examination.
