Former woman professor commits suicide at college campus in Arumbakkam

A 32-year-old woman who quit her job as an assistant professor from DG Vaishnav College in Arumbakkam two years ago was found hanging at the college campus on Wednesday.

The maintenance staff who went to sweep the classrooms on Wednesday morning found a woman hanging from ceiling with bleeding wrists in one of the classrooms of the Telugu department on the first floor of the buildings. 

Shocked staff members alerted the college administration and Arumbakkam police was subsequently informed. 

Preliminary inquiry revealed that her name is Hari Shanthi Police said that S Hari Shanthi of Karambakkam at Tiruvallur district, a PhD holder, was employed as an assistant professor at the Telugu department in the college five years ago. 

While she quit the job two years ago after getting a government job as a school teacher, she often visited the college as she allegedly was in relationship with another professor in her department.

On Tuesday too, she dropped by in the campus around 1 pm and came to know that her boyfriend is all set to get married to another woman and that the wedding engagement between them is formally over.

Shocked over this, she allegedly argued with her boyfriend after which the latter left the premises, while Hari Shanthi remained in the campus.

Police suspect that she could have committed suicide after everybody left the campus. After cutting her left wrist with a knife she could have hanged self using her shawl from the ceiling, said police.

While her body has been sent for post-mortem, police are investigating the incident further.
