The official sources from the Directorate of Medical Services said there were many clinical establishments that remain unregistered and others which have not even applied for licence but continue to function.

As per the Clinical Establishments Act, all the clinical and medical institutions have to register with the State government.

According to officials, registration of the establishments is under process and five-year licence would be issued after its completion. After that, the hospitals and clinics that are not registered would be shut down.

However, there is no action plan prepared by the Directorate of Medical Services to identify the unregistered establishments.

Officials from the State Health department said they expected a total of 50,000 applications from all the clinical establishments. There are about 80,000 registered and practicing medicos in the State.

As per the regulations, the clinical establishments should have a consulting room of at least 100 square feet with adequate lighting and ventilation, sufficient seating availability and an adequate number of the medical staff at the establishment.

The Act also specify the basic required equipment, including examination couch, stethoscope, thermometer, measuring tape, examination trays and patient record book.

“We are considering to conduct field inspections along with the district administration officials to check all the clinical establishments to ensure that only registered ones remain,” said a senior official from the Directorate of Medical Services.
