Van used to steal ATM money found, driver, cash missing

Hours after a driver escaped from Velachery with a van filled with around Rs 52 lakh in cash meant for refilling ATMs, the vehicle was found abandoned near a Tasmac shop in Korukkupet on Friday morning. The driver and the cash were missing.
The police traced the vehicle with the help of a GPS tracker fixed in the vehicle and have launched a hunt for the driver who has been identified as Ambrose.
Sources said that a police team has already questioned the driver’s wife Rani Mary and is hopeful of nabbing him soon.
Ambrose had escaped with a Mahindra Xylo, filled with cash when three staff members of CMS Info Systems went to refill cash at a Vijaya Bank ATM at Vijaya Nagar in Velachery on Thursday evening.
The team had started out with Rs 87 lakh from Teynampet. After replenishing five ATMs on the way, they reached Velachery and while the three officials were inside the ATM, Ambrose drove away vehicle with the remaining Rs 52 lakh. The staff had later lodged a complaint with the Velachery police.
