Lakshman Sruthi owner commits suicide at home

V Raman, one of three brothers who run the popular Lakshman Sruthi light music troupe and the music instrument shop at Ashok Nagar, committed suicide at his house on Tuesday night. Raman was 54, and is survived by his wife Nirmala and son Manoj.

As their annual Carnatic music programme during the Margazhi season, Chennaiyil Thiruvaiyaru is going on at Kamarajar Arangam in Teynampet on Tuesday evening, Raman is said to have left the premises around 6.30 pm.


His wife and son who reached home in Dr Subbarayan Nagar at Kodambakkam after the show grew suspicious when Raman failed to open the door. They broke open the door with the help of their driver Vinoth and found Raman hanging from the fan in the hall.


He was removed from the noose and rushed to a private hospital in Vadapalani. But the doctors there declared him brought dead. On information, Ashok Nagar police retrieved his body and sent it to Omandurar Government Hospital for post-mortem examination.


A case was registered under 174 CrPC and further investigation is on. Preliminary inquiries revealed that Raman was suffering from several health ailments and had recently undergone an angiogram. He is suspected to have resorted to the extreme step after being depressed over his deteriorating health.


Raman has an elder brother, Murugavel, and younger brother, Lakshman. The police are also probing if there is any other reason for his suicide.
