The arrested youth were identified as Yeshwanth Raja (25), a singer; Vignesh (22) and Goutham (22), who are college students; Sathish Kumar and Srikanth (22), said to be college dropouts, and Aravind Krishna (26).
About six months ago, Aravind Krishna from Tiruchy rented a house in Ganapathi Nagar in Chromepet. He claimed that he was working in a private firm in Chennai and was the grandson of a local singer. Following him, Yeshwanth Raja came and started sharing the house, and then Vignesh, Goutham, Sathish Kumar and Srikanth moved in.
Trouble started when the youth started playing loud music two weeks ago. They were allegedly drunk, police said. On Monday, angry neighbours gathered outside the house and asked them to vacate it. They were joined by the house owner, but even then, the youth refused to vacate, the police said.
The neighbours then filed a complaint with the Chitlapakkam police. On Monday night, a team from the station surrounded the house. When they went in they found more than three kg of ganja. The youth had smuggled it from Andhra Pradesh and were packing it into small packets, police said.
Officials said the gang was accepting booking on WhatsApp, and were planning to deliver it at doorstep or courier before the New Year.
