On Thursday morning, hundreds of villagers from Veerapuram, Aminjikarai, Vitialpuram, Vaiyaloor gathered on Kalpakkam-Vitilapuram Road and staged a demonstration.

The villagers claimed that they had spent nearly Rs 30,000 for every acre of their farm and sowed groundnuts in their fields a few weeks ago. Following the heavy rain on January 1, all their crops were damaged, they claimed.

The villagers also said that they don’t even have the money to buy seeds and other farming necessities again and so the government has to step in and help them. The Village Administrative Officer and other officials who visited the spot spoke to the villagers and asked them to submit their petition to the district collector and other concerned officials. The villagers were assured that proper steps will be taken to help them. Following that, the protesters dispersed. The agitation had affected traffic for nearly an hour.
