The couple, Sivakumar (38) and his wife Madeswari (34), hail from Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh. The deceased was identified as Karthikeyan, a resident of School Street in Anakaputhur near Pallavaram, who was an electrician and also a social activist.
Police said Karthikeyan, a married man, was in a relationship with Madeswari when the couple was residing in Anakaputhur. After knowing about the affair, Sivakumar vacated the house and the couple returned to their native.
According to the police, Karthikeyan kept on contacting Madeswari even after that. Last month, the couple planned to kill him, and Madeswari invited him to Andhra.
Without realising what was in store, he went there on December 18 without informing anyone at home. As he did not return home and his mobile phone remained switched off, the family began to search for him. On December 30, they filed a complaint with the Shankar Nagar police.
When they tracked the mobile phone signals, the police found that Karthikeyan had spoken to Sivakumar in Andhra.
Then they found out that he used to contact Madeswari often. Following this, a team went to Andhra and detained the couple.
Though they initially denied the charges, they admitted that they murdered him by bludgeoning him with iron rods, and added that his body was buried in a vacant land.
Sources said Sivakumar and Madeswari were arrested on Thursday and formalities were in progress to retrieve Karthikeyan’s body from the place where he was buried.
