Onion sells at Rs 50/kg now, may sell for Rs 20 soon

“Two days ago, the onion was sold for Rs 90 per kg. On Saturday, we received 60 trucks loads of onions from Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and imported onions from Egypt. Currently, onion is being sold for Rs 30 to Rs 50 per kg. Pongal onwards, the prices might go down to Rs 40 per kg and from the following week it would be sold for Rs 20 per kg,” said M John Valthari, Secretary of Onion Merchants Association.

Prices of other vegetables remain standard from last week. Now, tomato is being sold for Rs 20 to Rs 25 per kg, potato Rs 30 to Rs 35, beans Rs 40, peas Rs 70 to Rs 75, carrot for Rs 40 and ladies-finger for Rs 25 to Rs 30 per kg at the market.

Flower vendors also saw a fall in prices, with increased supply. But, from Saturday there has a been a fall in the sale as well. “The sale has come down for the last two days. It may increase only from Pongal. Currently, jasmine is being sold for Rs 850 – Rs 900 per kg, jasmine sambac for Rs 600 – Rs 750 per kg, pink jasmine Rs 300 – Rs 360 per kg, marigold Rs 100 – Rs 170, tuberose Rs 90 – Rs 120, damask rose Rs 100 – Rs 120 and rose Rs 160 – Rs 180,” said S Mookandi, Secretary of Koyambedu Flower Merchants Association.
