Corpn uses night shelter for poll work, irks inmates

The Greater Chennai Corporation’s move to use a building now functioning as a shelter for homeless persons for the works related to the upcoming local body election has irked the persons taking refuge at the facility. They fear that it could also be made into a polling booth, which would affect them till the election process is over.

According to sources, the civic body had instructed the management of the night shelter at Lock Nagar in Teynampet zone to make arrangements to use the building as a special camp for addition and deletion of names in electoral roll. Based on the instruction, the camp was conducted on Saturday and Sunday.

“If they conduct special camp at the night shelter, they would convert the building as a polling booth during election days. This will hamper the free movement of residents staying in the night shelter. They are doing it every time, even though we oppose,” a resident of the night shelter said on condition of anonymity.

Lock Nagar night shelter for men presently has 20 persons, including elderlies, staying in the shelter.

When contacted, a Chennai Corporation official said that the special camp would not disturb the residents, nor would it affect the functions of the shelter.

However, the resident said that the civic body would impose several restrictions on the day of polling and police force would also be deployed. “This will create uneasiness among the residents. The civic body should leave the night shelters alone, and arrange special camps in some place else,” he said.
