According to a Chennai Corporation official, conservancy workers have been employed in the beach in three shifts, who would remove garbage from the sand round the clock. “A total of 35 conservancy workers are employed. They will make a regular round on the sands with a portable garbage bin and pick garbage,” the official said.
The litter-free zone was launched by Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash in an event on Monday. Apart from employing conservancy workers, the civic body also erected separate garbage bins for cloth waste, metal waste, glass waste, paper waste, plastic waste and leather waste on the beach.
Meanwhile, the civic body had already deployed sweeping vehicles to clean Marina Beach, which would collect garbage from the sands. The official added that the civic body would convert Marina Beach into a litter-free zone.
