Due to the influence of social media, many in the city have taken up the art form as both a hobby and a profession. “Calligraphy is a lot like zen-doodling in the sense that it is a therapeutic form of art. It’s very easy to lose yourself while writing. It is very popular in the West, and is slowly becoming popular here as well,” said Sri Mithra, an artist from the city.
According to the 23-year-old, people in the city have expressed interest in the art form over the last year due to two reasons – firstly, due to its use in fields like arts and event management, and secondly, due to curiosity for the new art form.
“I got into calligraphy because I wanted to take up a hobby that was different from the usual. I am not too good at art and drawing, but this was easy enough for me to pick and practise. It also serves as a stress-buster at times,” said Veena, an enthusiast from the city.
The biggest hurdle for hobbyists is the accessibility of resources and classes. The varieties of pens and brushes required for calligraphy are not available at art supply stores and must be purchased online. Calligraphy sets of a good quality start at Rs 500 onwards.
“I took up the classes when I studied in the UK. Other artists also hold calligraphy workshops in the city, and from my experience, there are many takers,” said Mithra, who will hold a workshop at Nolita on February 8.
“As a business, calligraphy does have the opportunity in the city. From making handmade event invitations to handwritten cards with gifts and vouchers, opportunities are high enough to sustain financially,” she said.
“The awareness is slowly but surely increasing, as is interest in the art form. People have been taking to social media to share more about it and teach people about the styles and techniques more,” said Mithra.
