The deceased was identified as Balakrishnan (45), a van driver from Muthilainalankuppam village in Thirukazhukundram and his son Vettrivel.

The boy committed suicide first, upset that his father fought with his mother, said the police, adding that his father also followed suit, blaming himself for his son’s death.

According to the police, Balakrishnan was addicted to alcohol and would get drunk every day and quarrel with his wife Sundari (38).

On Tuesday evening, Balakrishnan returned home drunk and began to quarrel with Sundari. Unable to tolerate it, Sundari went to her maternal home in the nearby village.

After Sundari left, Vettrivel went to his father and asked him to apologise to Sundari and bring her back. He told his father that every child was happy and celebrating Pongal with their families. Balakrishnan told Vettrivel that he tried to reach Sundari but her mobile phone was switched off. He then went to bed.

When Balakrishnan woke up around 11 pm, he found Vettrivel hanging on the ceiling using his mother’s saree.

Blaming himself for the boy’s suicide, Balakrishnan committed suicide by hanging next to him.

Around midnight, the younger son Deva (5) woke up to see the bodies of both his father and elder brother hanging.

Hearing his cries, the neighbours rushed to the house and took both of them to a nearby private hospital where they were declared dead on arrival.

On information, the Thirukazhukundram police arrived at the spot sent the bodies for post-mortem examination to the Chengalpattu government hospital.
