Kannan (45), who was doing welding work at the plant, slipped through the roof and fell into the 12-feet deep sump. Hearing his cries for help, another worker, Prakash (24), jumped into the sump to rescue him.
But both of them drowned after they lost consciousness inhaling the poisonous gas. On information, the Ambattur Industrial Estate police and fire and rescue personnel rushed to the spot.
The bodies were recovered with the help of a ladder and rope. Paramedical staff examined them and confirmed their death before sending the bodies to Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) hospital for post-mortem examination.
Ambattur Industrial Estate police inspector Vijayaragavan has registered a case under CrPC Section 174 (unnatural death) and further investigation is on.
