The deceased, Mitra, was the daughter of Hemkumar, an electrician, and Saranya from Tiruttani. They had gone to the house of Saranya’s sister on the Sixth Street, Saraswathi Nagar.
When Hemkumar went to a hospital with his co-brother as the latter was ill, Saranya, her sister and the latter’s father-in-law were at home, the police said. “Saranya said she was feeding her new-born when Mitra was playing inside the house. When she asked Mitra not to run around, she allegedly told her she was going to sleep,” added the investigation officer.
However, Saranya could not find Mitra when she entered the room 15 minutes later. After searching for her, she also looked into the well. To her shock, Mitra was floating on the water. Hearing Saranya’s cries for help, neighbours retrieved Mitra and rushed her to the hospital, but she was declared brought dead.
On information, the Tirumullaivoyal police registered a case and sent her body for post-mortem examination. The police said that the ring wall of the well was only three feet in diameter, but there was water at 10 feet from the surface. A case has been registered and further investigation is on.
