The locals demanded that along with the restoration of the lake, the PWD officials should also remove the encroachments and stop the public from dumping garbage into the lake. “It is happy to see that the lake being restored. The residents and officials should make sure that the park and lake are maintained. Since two years back, the officials who cleared the garbage, dumped it into the lake and the residents followed suit,” said Srinisha M, a resident of Pallikaranai.
“Instead of cleaning the lake based on the complaints, the officials should maintain the lake regularly. Both the residents and officials should take responsibility, or else there is no use in taking efforts to rejuvenate the lake,” she opined.
Stating that the initiative to restore the lake was a result of their struggle, Sankar N, another resident of Pallikaranai, said, “Soon, we need not go to any nearby lake or park to spend time in the evenings. We will get a good place for our morning walks which we missed for a few years. We are glad that the officials have taken steps to develop the lake and we hope that the work would be completed soon without any delay.”
A senior PWD official said that the total cost allotted for rejuvenating the water bodies in the city was Rs 1.30 crore and added, “The work is expected to be completed in six months and we will also take necessary steps to maintain the lake and park.”
