According to the prosecution, Prakash, a resident of Pallavaram, had gone to visit his cousin in a hospital near Central Railway Station, when the incident occurred.
The accused, R Kumar alias Aruppu Kumar, 34, intimidated Prakash and took out a knife he was hiding and pressed it against Prakash’s neck and robbed all the valuables including a 1.25-sovereign gold chain, a mobile phone, and Rs 1,340 in cash. When the bystanders tried to nab the accused, he threatened them too with the knife and ran to safety.
The prosecution contended that Kumar not only robbed Prakash, but also endangered public safety and intimidated the bystanders.
Countering this, Kumar denied the allegations and submitted that he had not done anything wrong.
Recording the submissions, the court found Kumar guilty under Sections 341, 392 and 397 of IPC. The court sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,500.
