According to a Chennai Corporation official, incineration plants with a capacity of 100 tonnes per day each would come up in Pallikaranai, Mylapore, Ambattur, Sathangagu, Kodungaiyur and Ayanavaram.

“We have floated tenders inviting firms to implement the project. The contractors should supply, install and commission the plants,” he said.

The civic body has assured that the incineration process would be free from odour, eco-friendly and non-polluting in order to reduce the impact of dumping site in the adjacent areas.

“We laid a condition in the tender that incineration plant should be free from emission, pollution and contamination of environment and control of dust and noise pollution as per Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board norms,” the official added.

Of around 5,000 tonnes of garbage generated in the city every day, 25 to 30 per cent is non-recyclable dry waste.

Presently, the civic body has a composting capacity of around 400 tonnes to process wet waste every day.

Apart from mulching pits in parks, there are more than 200 composting plants are functioning in the city.
