The police said that the incident happened at 12.20 am when the victim, Gargesh Kumar (40), came for duty to relieve Nilambar Sinha (49), who was already on duty. As Gargesh was late to report for duty, Nilambar picked up a fight with Gargesh and in a fit of rage shot him to death. The victim is a native of Himachal Pradesh.

The police also noted that Nilambar, a native of Tripura, had joined the Chennai office only three days ago. He is married and has two children who are settled in their native. The police also indicated that the killer was being treated for depression.

The police said that there were three other men at the scene, but they were sleeping.

Nilambar fired seven rounds and three hit Gargesh. The others, who woke up to the sound of shots being fired, took cover behind wooden benches nearby and alerted the seniors who were on duty.

Based on input from the scene of firing, additional forces with guns surrounded Nilambar and asked him to drop his weapon. Then the force nabbed him.

Gargesh’s body was moved to Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital for autopsy. The Avadi Tank Factory police registered a case and further investigations are on. A senior police officer, who conducted inquiries with the suspect, said that it is possible that he was under depression and that could have triggered the incident.
