Conduct study to improve air quality, NGT directs TNPCB
The National Green Tribunal (Southern Zone) has directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to conduct a detailed study and submit a report to improve the air quality in Chennai and rest of Tamil Nadu. Though the Principal Bench, New Delhi, is monitoring the Ambient Air Quality in a pan India basis, that will not prevent this tribunal to monitor independently, the bench said.

Earlier, when the petition filed by G S Mani came up for hearing, the bench noted that Principal Bench of the tribunal has taken suo moto cognizance over media reports and several directions were issued, including an action plan to improve the Ambient Air Quality of critically polluted cities and status of implementation and same would have to be monitored by the Chief Secretaries of the respective States.
The State governments have to prepare a comprehensive action plan based on Graded Response Action Plan(GRAP) as notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change. The petition requested to include Chennai in the list of critically polluted cities and submitted data regarding the variations of the Ambient Air Quality during different period.
Recording the submissions, Justice K Ramakrishnan, Judicial Member and Saibal Dasgupta, Expert Member, said, “We feel it is appropriate to direct TNPCB to conduct a detailed study and submit the report within two months.” “If they feel that monitoring stations have to be established to monitor the air quality, that can also be considered,” the bench said.
