Jayakumar, a resident of Mugappiar, claimed that he had nothing to do with the scam and that he decided to surrender because his photograph was being circulated in the media and named him a suspect. He added that this has harmed his reputation and dignity in society.

The police had already arrested 32 persons in connection with malpractice on Group 4 exam in 2019 and Group 2A exam in 2017. The CB-CID had got five days custody of Sithandi, a policeman who acted as a middleman in the scam, on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a press release from the CB-CID on Friday confirmed that the agency has registered a fresh case – the third one linked to TNPSC exam malpractice – in connection with malpractice in the 2016 VAO recruitment. A VAO named Sakthi alias Narayanan, working in Villupuram, was secured for questioning by the CB-CID on Thursday. He had paid Rs 3.5 lakh to Jayakumar and collected Rs 34 lakh from five others to facilitate their selection. Similarly, he had collected another Rs 73 lakh from seven people to get selected in the 2017 group 2A exams and gave it to Jayakumar, the press release noted.
