Corpn invites bids to redevelop Mylapore street

One of the major streets in the traditional locality, Kalvi Varu Street, links Mundakanniamman Koil Street to Tirumayilai railway station. “The project will be implemented under ‘Namakku Naame Thittam’, under which we have taken up the beautification of Buckingham Canal,” a Chennai Corporationofficial said.

He added that the design for the redevelopment has already been prepared and the street would have wider footpaths, street furniture, parking space and greenery like the pedestrian plaza in T Nagar. Recently, the street was inspected by Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash, who reviewed itsprepared design.

The civic body is slated to spend around Rs 4 crore for the street which spans around 400 metres in length. The bids will be opened on February 18.

The Buckingham Canal is also supposed to undergo a change as the civic body has proposed to create walkways, bicycle track and a green bank to promote non-motorised transport between Kasturibai Nagar and Tiruvanmiyur MRTS stations.

Under the non-motorised transport policy, the Corporation has proposed to redevelop 87 streets extending up to 112 kilometres with bicycle tracksand walkways.
