One of the commuters here claimed that the underground drainage system which is located near the Chromepet bus stop towards Guindy on the GST Road has been leaking for the past few months. “We have complained to the officials several times and even requested them to take steps to repair the clogged drainage but no steps have been taken,” said Shanthi, a bus commuter from Chromepet.
As there are two Government Higher Secondary Schools located near the bus stop, everyday hundreds of students also use the bus stop to commute. Besides, several college students from the area and regular commuters to nearby commercial complexes also use the bus station. They claim that at times, the sewage flows on the road and the stench is unbearable forcing them to stay away from the station.
Some of the students even complain that while they wait for the bus, other speeding vehicles splash the sewer on their uniforms and most of the days they would return home as they could not attend the classes with the dirty uniforms.
“The staff from Pallavaram municipality are cleaning only the area surrounding the leaking drainage once a month and they are never repairing the drainage,” said Dinesh T K, another resident of Chromepet.
When contacted, the Pallavaram Municipal Sanitary officer Govindarajan said, “There are some faults with the pipeline and the engineering team is working on it. We are also warning the local shop keepers not to dump the waste in the drainage and action will be taken on the people who are violating it.”
