The victim, Saraswathi of Anagaputhur, visited her daughter’s house in Pallavaram on Monday. When she was walking to her house Anagaputhur bus stop around 8.30 pm, two men in an autorickshaw intercepted her on Ambedkar Road and introduced themselves as police officers. They told the elderly woman that there was a clash between two groups at the end of Ambekar Road and if she goes there wearing gold ornaments, someone might snatch them.

The duo instructed her to remove her gold chain and earrings and asked her to wrap it in a paper. The police said that Saraswathi, who did not realise she was being conned, removed the gold ornaments. She gave them to the duo who offered to wrap them for her.

They gave the packet to her and escaped from the spot in the same auto. Saraswathi continued to walk towards home without any suspicion. But when she reached the end of Ambedkar Road, there was no clash like the ‘policemen’ mentioned. Suspecting a foul play, she opened the packet they gave her and found that there were only small stoned in it instead of her gold ornaments.

Realising that she was conned, she lodged a complaint at the Shankar Nagar police station. The police have registered a case and are trying to identify the con artists with the help of CCTV footages from the area.
