The arrested persons were identified as S Akash (20), M Madhan Naidu (21) of Ekkaduthangal, K Sathish (19) of Alandur and K Janakiraman (23) of Saidapet.

The incident happened on February 7 when about 20 youngsters were celebrating a birthday with loud music and slogans. Two of them — Akash and Janakiraman — cut the birthday cake at Ekkaduthangal with long machetes. Disturbed neighbours alerted the police control room. But the gang fled in different directions on noticing the arrival of the patrol vehicle.

However, a TikTok video of the celebration released the next day went viral. Based on the video, the Guindy police registered a case and secured the suspects. The four main accused were booked under Sections 283 and 506 of the IPC and remanded in judicial custody.

The police said that all four men were habitual offenders, while others were school and college students from the neighbourhood. The four held have been remanded to judicial custody.

Despite the police action against those celebrating birthdays in gangster Binu style, such incidents continue to be reported from across the State.
