Details in Distance: Civic body to relay bus routes for 310 km with Rs 1,160 cr
The Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to prepare detailed project reports to relay bus routes along 310 kilometres. Rs 1,160 crore has been earmarked for the project.

This is in line with the civic body’s plans to repair damaged roads and give the existing ones a facelift. According to a Corporation official, roads running along 136.20 kilometres in North and South regions of the civic body and 174.40 kilometres in the Central region would be relayed.
“We have invited consultants to prepare two detailed project reports for North and South region and for Central region. It will include pavement composition and other aspects in addition to required relaying components,” an official said.
He added that 59 bus route roads, including Ennore High Road, Tondiarpet High Road and Sardar Patel road would be completely relaid. The project would be implemented under Chennai Mega City Development Mission (CMCDM) and Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Fund (TURIF) funds.
Apart from these roads, partial relaying works would be carried out in 115 bus route roads across the city. The civic body has decided to spend Rs 1,160 crores for the project.
Corporation Commissioner G Prakash had conducted a meeting recently to apprise the contractors and project management consultants, and instructed them to complete the ongoing road works.
Under the new project, the civic body has also planned to create pedestrian pathways along 82 roads in the city. Of the allotted Rs 1,160 crore, Rs 115 crore would used for the footpaths.
“Once the DPRs are prepared, we will float tenders to invite road contractors. We are planning to complete the road relaying works before the monsoon,” the official said.
