Periyar Nagar residents rue lack of Metro Water supply
Periyar Nagar is a residential area created for the Secretariat staff before three decades and is one of the planned residential localities located between Perambur and Kolathur. Though the large section of the area has no complaints, residents of second and third streets complain that they do not receive Metro Water.

According to the residents, when Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewage Board (CMWSSB) laid pipes 10 years ago, they were assured that water supply will be regular. But they have been facing problems in receiving Metro Water and it gets acuteduring summers.
Murugan, who runs a provisional store, said, “The houses located on the eastern side of the second and third streets do not receive Metro Water. However, the houses on the western side of second and third street and the adjoining houses in Jawahar Nagar receive a regular supply.”
Murugan added that the situation remains even as the hand pumps in the houses provide water. If not addressed, the problem will aggravate in summer when the water level goes down and hand pumps will not fetch the required quantity of water.
Similarly, Rajeswari, another resident, said that the problem is mainly due to faulty pipelines. Residents have to depend on their neighbours to fetch water. “Neighbouring areas like GKM colony got new pipelines and the water flow is better inthose areas.”
When DT Next contacted an engineer attached to the CMWSSB, he said that the sections of second and third streets are at a higher altitude compared to the neighbouring areas.
The problem in supply is due to the lower pressure. The engineer added that water pressure will be higher early in the morning and residents can fetch water during that time. However, Rajeswari said that the water pressure islow even at 4 am.
