Auspicious days boost flower sales, price in city market

In the recent past, the sale of flowers had remained dull, said S Mookandi, secretary of Koyambedu Flower Merchants’ Association, adding that there was a shortage of supply. “It led to a loss in business. After a month, the flower vendors had profit in the business,” he added.

“On Friday, the prices increased owing to Sivarathri, and people purchased more flowers than usual on Sunday due to ‘Maasi Amavasai’ and Mayana Kollai. The prices may register a fall by next week,” said Mookandi.

Jasmine is now being sold for Rs 600 to Rs 650 per kg, jasmine sambac for Rs 400 to Rs 500 per kg, pink jasmine for Rs 400, rose for Rs 140 to Rs 160 per kg, damask rose for Rs 100 to Rs 120, and tuberose for Rs 400 to Rs 500 per kg.

The prices of vegetables remained largely constant, said traders at the vegetable market in the complex, adding that they were expected to increase from mid-March.

Currently, onions are being sold for Rs 15 – Rs 30 per kg, tomato for Rs 15 per kg, beans Rs 15 – Rs 20 per kg, carrot Rs 20 – Rs 25 per kg, cabbage Rs 8 – Rs 10 per kg, radish Rs 10 per kg, and beetroot for Rs 8 – Rs 10 per kg,” said P Sukumaran, secretary, Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants’ Association.
