The Sriperumbudur police received a tip-off that a vehicle with Red sandalwoods is parked in the godown in Mampakkam village near Sriperumbudur. The godown belongs to Muthu (32) of the locality. The police checked the van and found six wooden logs weighing about 300 kg. It was also found that the vehicle had fake number plates.
When the police questioned the owner of the godown, his statements weren’t cohesive. Though Muthu claimed that two men parked the vehicle at the godown after it broke down initially, he later said he found the van abandoned on GST Road. As it was old, he brought it to the godown, but he did not know the woods were red sanders.
The police seized the red sanders and handed it to the forest department. Sources said the red sanders is worth Rs 5 lakh. The Sriperumbudur police have registered a case and arrested Muthu for further inquiry.
