PWD plants 500 saplings at Govt Ophthalmic Hosp
Around 500 saplings were planted by the Building Wing of the Public Works Department (PWD) at Government Ophthalmic Hospital and Regional Institute of Ophthalmology in Egmore last week. The hospital had removed 75 trees on its campus to pave way for the construction of the bicentenary building at its premises, and also for the renovation of the existing structures. “We have shifted the native trees from the hospital to other places. We have transplanted 36 trees in the hospital campus recently, and 500 new native plants, including neem, tamarind, kondrai, and pungai, have been planted,” said a senior building wing official.
The official added that only native trees are being shifted. “There is no point in replanting the rain trees, because they are fast-growing. The other trees that are more than five to ten years will be shifted to other places. Nearly 20 per cent of the bicentenary building construction is completed, and it is expected to be completed by June,” said the official.
Before the 75 trees were removed from the hospital premises, the campus was a habitat for birds and small mammals like mongoose.
