Police told to monitor Chepauk junction for haphazard auto parking

A division bench comprising Justice M Sathyanarayanan and Justice R Hemalatha on disposing a public interest litigation moved by a resident of Arunachalam Street on directing the Triplicane police to ensure that there is no unauthorised parking of the vehicles which may result in law and order and public order problems sought it to file a status report with supporting documents and photographs in this regard on March 12.

The petitioner Manikandan in the affidavit had submitted among other things that there is a group of 10 auto drivers who park their autos unauthorised in the junction of the four streets, viz., Arunachalam Street, Murugappa Street, Typhoon Ali Khan Street and are creating nuisance.

That apart, no traffic regulation has been put in place and taking advantage of the same, other vehicles are entering the locality unauthorised and are being parked causing hardship and nuisance to the locals, he said.

Additional Government Pleader R Vijayakumar, appearing for the police submitted that though permission was sought to locate an auto stand, the Inspector of Police, Triplicane Traffic Police Station has sent a communication on January 16, 2020 to the jurisdictional Additional Commissioner of Traffic, stating that since objections were raised, no permission was accorded to locate the auto stand. He also noted that the nuisance of unauthorised parking and related problems caused, have been abated on account of the prompt action taken by the jurisdictional police and assured that it will not happen in future.

However, the petitioner’s counsel submitted that the auto drivers, not only park their vehicles unauthorised, but also create law and order and public order problems. Sometimes, they behave indecently and at time also threaten the locals, the petitioner said.
