The police said that Hemanathan was a first-year BA English Literature student of Pachaiyappa’s college in the city. “On Tuesday evening, Hemanathan visited the Marina with his brother Mohan and sisters Kalaivani and Jeevitha. Around 5.30 pm, while Hemanathan was bathing near Labour Statue, a giant wave sucked him away,” the police noted.

Seeing him struggling in the water, his brother Mohan raised an alarm and the beach patrol police, along with the fishermen, rushed to his rescue. Hemanathan was taken out of the water and rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital. But he was declared dead on arrival.

The Anna Square Police have registered a case.
