City bakers pay homage to Kalam with giant cake, set record

In a bid to pay tributes to late President APJ Abdul Kalam in a unique manner, 30 city bakers created a humongous 2,020kg cake with an image of the former president. The effort got the baking experts into the Asia Book of Records, the organisers said.

During the event, held by the Rotary, along with The Cake World, the bakers created a 25 X 31-foot cake. “The event was to realise Dr Kalam’s dream and vision of India becoming a superpower in 2020. The proceeds from the event will go towards HIV and cancer patients,” a statement from the organisers said.

Kalam’s grandnephew APJ Sheikh Salim was one among the audience members who were present to witness this giant cake being assembled and iced. South Indian representative of Asia Book of Records Vivek said on the occasion, “So far in Asia, no one has created such a massive cake with a photograph on it, although cakes in various forms and sizes were made.”

Rameswaram-born Kalam, who passed away in 2015, envisioned India to become a developed nation by the year 2020 in his book, India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium.
