Cabbie held for taking child on ride sans parents

Tension prevailed in Adambakkam after a 9-year-old girl was driven away by a cab driver without her parents. After he was nabbed, the driver claimed that he thought the girl was travelling alone, as she did not raise any alarm when he started the vehicle.

The police have detained the driver, Karthick (35), and are ascertaining the genuineness of his statement.


Johnson (39) of Adambakkam, who owns a provision store, had booked a cab for attending a meeting in Royapettah along with his wife Regina (35) and daughter Jacqueline (9).


After the cab arrived attheir house, Jacqueline got inside the vehicle. Regina handed over some snacks and water bottle through the window, and went inside the house to reportedly call Johnson.


When the couple arrived after a few minutes, they were shocked to realise that the driver had left with their daughter.


When Johnson tried tocontact the driver, his mobile was switched off. Soon, the Adambakkam police were informed, following which an alert was sounded to identify the vehicle using the vehicle number.


After an hour, the Royapettah police spotted the vehicle and intercepted it. The police team found Jacquline seated on the rear seat.


During inquiry, Karthick claimed that he did not know that they were travelling as a family and he thought the girl was travelling alone to Royapettah.


He showed the police he was only following the location for which they had booked the cab and was maintaining the correct time. Officials said the driver he had joined the work only a week ago.


The Adambakkam police who arrived at the spot detained the cab driver and are conducting further inquiry.
