The incident happened when Latha (27) and her daughter Nikshita (1) were alone at house on Pilot Lane at Royapettah.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that Latha, who was pregnant, underwent a medical termination at a private hospital in Porur on Wednesday afternoon.

Though she returned home on Wednesday night itself, the bleeding reportedly did not stop. Latha’s husband, Sathyanarayanan, left for work on Thursday morning.

Unable to bear the pain, Latha locked herself and Nikshita inside the house before dousing herself in kerosene and immolating self.

Neighbours broke open the door and found Latha and Nikshita charred to death. On information, staff from Royapettah Government Hospital rushed to the spot and took the bodies for post-mortem examination.

A case has been registered and further investigation is on.
