According to a Health Department official, the seizure was effected during a regular inspection at the slum clearance board area in the locality.
“The owner and other workers of the shop ran away after spotting us. On suspicion, we checked the beef stored inside the shop and found them to be rotten,” the official said.
During the investigation, it transpired that the rotten meat was being sliced into small pieces to supply them to hotels in the city.
Also, the official said that the shop was functioning without a trade license.
Soon after the seizure, the meat samples were sent to the Food Safety Department and the veterinary section of the civic body for testing.
“As the food safety department and veterinary section certified the meat unfit for human consumption, we destroyed the meat at Kodungaiyur dump yard,” the official said.
However, officials could not identify the owner of the shop and they have decided to file a police complaint.
In November 2018, officials had seized more than 1,600 kilograms of meat resembling dog meat at Egmore railway station. However, tests confirmed that the meat was of a type of goats reared in Rajasthan.
