The bike-borne men were members of ‘Sambo’ Senthil’s gang, he said, adding that the target was notorious gangster ‘Kakkathope’ Balaji who was inside the car.In a letter submitted to Teynampet police inspector, advocate S Thangaraj of Ashok Nagar stated he had gone to High Court with his client Manikandan to meet a senior lawyer. There, his client met Balaji, who sought a lift to Guindy on their way back.

When they reached near Spencer Plaza signal around 4 pm, Thangaraj, who was driving the vehicle following Manikandan’s request, realised that they were being followed. “Balaji told Manikandan that the persons following us were ‘Pondicherry’ Prasanna and Napoleon, associates of ‘Sambo’ Senthil, who were trying to kill him over previous enmity,” he added.

Near Gemini bridge, the attackers tried to throw a country bomb at the vehicle. Balaji asked him to head to Teynampet police station, so he took a right from Gemini bridge and went on the wrong side to reach the station quickly. “When they threw the bomb at us, I took a right turn to GN Chetty Salai link road. As the bomb missed us, the bikers continued to follow us,” the lawyer said, claiming that the bikers had fired shots at them. They were followed till Aalaiyamman Koil.

Meanwhile, three more suspects identified as Harish (20), Satheesh (20) and Tamilselvan (25) from Tondiarpet surrendered before the Tenkasi Judicial Magistrate Court in Tirunelveli on Friday. The Judge remanded them in 15 days judicial custody.
