The injured were identified as A Shabida (42) of Royapettah, her eight-month-old grandson and M Fathima (20).
The incident happened around 4.30 at a private hospital on Big Street in Triplicane.
The police said that Shabida brought her grandson to the hospital after a doctor in the neighbourhood said that he has been affected by malaria.
Since she was asked to admit the child after first-aid, she took the elevator to reach the third floor. But the elevator suddenly dropped when they were about to reach the third floor after the cables snapped.
In the impact, the child lost consciousness and Shabida suffered injuries on the shoulder. Fathima, who was also in the lift with them, suffered injuries on the head, while three others escaped without injuries.
While Fathima was treated at the same hospital, Shabida has been shifted to another private hospital on Poonamallee High Road.
On information, relatives and neighbours of Shabida gathered in front of the hospital and staged a protest.
Following this, a team from the Ice House police station rushed to the spot. Further inquiry is on.
