No more solo, say women bikers as they vroom in unison at city event

The sound of roaring bikes filled the air at Lal Tyre Centre in Maduravoyal, as bikers revved their engine for the final flag off. To commemorate the International Women’s Day, the biking group Bikerni held a ride and awareness camp on Sunday morning.

This marks the first event by the all-women, nationwide biker group’s Chennai chapter. The event started off with a ride from Koyambedu to Maduravoyal, following which three talks were held.

For some female bikers, this was a chance to meet with other like-minded women. “I’m usually a solo rider. I’ve been riding for the last four years or so. While it is nice to go solo, I’ve always wanted to go for a ride with women for a long time. Now that we’ve all met, I think that should be possible,” said Nitya Sanjeev, an attendee.

Around 20 female and 40 male bikers took part in the event, said admin of the group, Shalini Devi. The bikers attended three talks – one on tyre maintenance by Apollo Tyres, one on community development by advocate Kalaivani J, and one on road safety by Inspector of Police Suguna.

“As an amateur rider, I only make sure that my vehicle is serviced regularly and that the tyres are full. However, we learned useful tips like using air instead of nitrogen for our tyres as it is more available. I also understood how important tyre maintenance is for road safety as well,” said Revathy Govindaraj, an attendee.

The event was organised in association with riding group Beast Riderz, and sponsored by Big Biking Commune, Zeal Creations and Lal Tyre Centre.

“In spite of not knowing each other well, the members of the biking community look out for each other, especially during longer rides. Now with the sisterhood joining in, we need men’s support for the same,” said Kalaivani, a biker.
