Daughter inspires DC to keep water bowls at stations
As the mercury is on the rise, 12 police stations in north Chennai have kept water bowls to quench the thirst of birds and animals, all thanks to Washermenpet Deputy Commissioner G Subbulakshmi who initiated the effort to place water bowls at all the police stations under her jurisdiction.

“I started this system by placing 50 water bowls at tea shops in Ambattur hoping that they will refill the bowls every day. But unfortunately, the water bowls kept for the animals and birds went missing after two or three days as many walked away with the bowl that looked small and attractive,” said the Deputy Commissioner.
“Now, as the temperature is already high, we have placed over 40 bowls in the police stations here. We have also ordered for 30 more bowls to keep it at places where they have gone missing,” she added.
VG Tamizh, the Deputy Commissioner’s daughter, became an activist on seeing them suffer during the 2015 Chennai floods. “During the floods, my friend and I went around rescuing dogs and other animals caught in the flood water. From last summer, I was inspired to keep water bowls for stray animals, and I went to every house at Ambattur to explain about the condition of animals that suffer during summer for want of water,” she said.
“I wish that everyone starts keeping water bowls at their house to help animals and birds,” Tamizh said, adding that she was happy that she was able to inspire her mother to do the same.
