The barricade has been kept to clear the traffic and avoid traffic snarls. The road that follows the Pazhavanthagal subway is wide at the beginning but as it proceeds further, the stretch gets narrower. This leads to congestion when there are vehicles especially, lorries and trucks plying on both directions.
“Motorists ignore the board prohibiting their entry even when police officials are found near the barricade. The police also fail to take any effort in stopping them from entering the stretch. Most of them fail to realise that failure to abide by rules may one day teach us a hard lesson,” said Guruswamy M, a resident of Pazhavanthangal.
The residents also pointed out that motorists jump the signal even before it could turn green resulting in many accidents on this stretch.
A fruit vendor S Saraswathi in the locality said, “Though there is police jeep and officials next to the barricade, we have not seen them warning the motorists. Also, the youngsters cross the speed limit which is also causes accidents. We have complained to the police officials but seems like they are not bothered.”
They said that during peak hours, they are forced to wait for more than an hour owing to poor traffic regulation. Also, the vendors in this road are blocking the pedestrian pathway.
When contacted, the traffic police said, “We have put the barricade to clear the traffic and avoid traffic snarls we have placed the barricade to detest people from taking the road on the wrong side. But none of them obey the rules resulting in a chaotic situation. It is very important the motorists develop a sense of responsibility to following traffic rules. However, we would take all steps to ensure that the menace is put to an end soon.”
