Rs 500 cr for 5 flyovers to decongest IT corridor

“To avoid traffic congestion on Rajiv Gandhi Road, well known as IT corridor, five flyovers would be constructed at important junctions between Taramani and Siruseri at a cost of Rs 500 crore. The five flyovers would be constructed in Taramani Road junction, Perungudi MGR road junction, Thoraipakkam Road junction, Sholinganallur Road junction and Siruseri Road junction,” said Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in the Assembly.

The Chief Minister also said that the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) from Siruseri to Mahabalipuram would be six-laned at the cost of Rs 350 crore. At present, the OMR from Madhya Kailash junction to Siruseri has been six-laned and now the remaining distance of 14.8 km would be six-laned along with service roads.

In the fourth section of Chennai Peripheral Road from Sriperumbudur to Singaperumalkovil, construction of vehicular subway, improvement of flyovers and enhancing road safety would be carried out at the cost of Rs 531 crore. In Chennai Vision 2023 Document, to fulfil the demands of future traffic needs and for better road connectivity with Chennai port the scheme of Chennai peripheral road was conceived.

The Chief Minister also said that three arterial roads in Chennai would be developed on par with international roads and detailed project report (DPR) would be prepared at the cost of Rs 9.1 crore. To prevent congestion in Anna Salai between Muthusamy bridge and Tambaram and to construct alternate road via Somamangalam and Irungattukottai to avoid Tambaram-Sriperumbudur Road, DPR would be prepared at the cost of Rs 38 lakh.

To facilitate people visiting Vandalur Zoo, a foot-overbridge along with escalator and lift would be constructed at the cost of Rs 16.17 crore.

In order to relieve the traffic congestion at various junctions in Chennai Metropolitan Area, 18 projects are proposed to be taken up under Chennai City Traffic Decongestion Project (CCTDP) with external funding assistance from New Development Bank (NDB). Initially, an amount of Rs 1,121.57 crore has been accorded for land acquisition and the CCTDP works would be undertaken in three tranches depending on the quantum of land acquisition and availability of work front.
