The officials identified the arrested person as S Sathish from Avadi, who was caught with the help of CCTV footage while they were investigating a snatching case reported on March 15.

On that day, S Karpagam, a resident of Avadi, was on her way to the fish market when a man on a motorcycle snatched her chain and sped away from the spot. Based on her complaint, the Avadi police registered a case and combed through the CCTV footage as similar complaints were received for the past three months in the same neighbourhood.

When they were checking the CCTV footage, the officials were shocked to find that Sathish was the criminal involved in the incident. Following this, he was arrested on Thursday and his two-wheeler was seized.

Sathish had joined the Youth Brigade in 2013 and later joined the Tamil Nadu Special Police Battalion in 2016. According to the police, he was removed from the service last year after he was arrested for an attempt to murder case.

“Last year, Sathish had asked for money from a colleague living in the police housing quarters. But as Sathish had a habit of taking loan on regular basis, the colleague’s wife had told him not to give money to Sathish. When he learnt about it in February, Sathish stabbed the woman. He was arrested in connection with the case,” the police said. After coming out on bail from prison, he turned into a full-time criminal, said the police.
